It’s a big weekend ahead for WP Club Rugby as we finally see the start of the much-anticipated annual WP Score Club Sevens, and our education machine is in full swing.
This weekend marks the beginning of the annual WP Score Club Sevens event, taking place with three regions at two venues, with forty passionate Western Province club rugby teams taking to the field.
Fans will be delighted to know that this Saturday will feature more than thirty Sevens rugby matches played at both the Goodwood and Kraaifontein Rugby clubs, involving nearly eight hundred players.
The Kraaifontein RFC rugby grounds will kick off the first matches at 12:30, with former sevens champions Hands and Heart facing Kraaifontein RFC, and Brackenfell RFC competing against Delft on two fields. The Goodwood venue fixtures will commence at 13:00, also across two fields, with Hamiltons RFC versus Faure and SK Walmers against Young Ideas as the first matches.
This year, the event spans three weeks, with the first two rounds on 4 and 11 November 2023. Each region is divided into two pools, and all players will be wearing Score Sevens Jerseys. The top two teams from each pool in regions one and two, and the top three from each pool in region three, will advance to the finals.
As always, the event features four categories: Cup, Plate, Bowl, and Shield sections, with the top sixteen teams competing in a knockout format in the finals on 18 November 2023.
This event is particularly unique because each club has the opportunity to design its own jerseys, and these jerseys are available for seasons to come. The competition is expected to be tough, as many of our clubs have now specialized in the sevens format.
The event is highly recommended not only from and entertainment perspective but also for the impact on social cohesion as our clubs and fans get to play and interact with clubs from other regions, leagues and geographical areas.
Score Energy Drinks has been supporting the event for the past seven years, and Western Province Rugby is grateful for the continuous support provided by Score Energy Drinks.
Fans and players will be pleased to know that their favourite energy drink will be available on site and players especially happy with their free energy drinks on the day. Additionally, WP Rugby is grateful to CTC Sports for their amazing support in manufacturing the high-quality custom jerseys and as always, our players and fans can watch some highlights on Cape Ruby TV weekly.
This week, we are hosting another exciting education course: the World Rugby Level One Strength and Conditioning course. This course provides a fantastic opportunity for fans and members to get involved in the game. Coaching strength and conditioning to a club rugby team is vital, especially as many of our clubs are moving into pre-season shortly after the Sevens Rugby champs annually.
Our next coaching course is scheduled for November 18th, 2023, and it is exclusively for women, as we continue our mission to grow the game of rugby for women. Click here to sign up now.
We congratulate our Springbok Rugby team on winning the World Cup and once again uniting South Africa. We are proud to see that many of the players in the team originate from
Western Province Rugby.
