Wet weeked does not stop WP Club Rugby

It was a wet but action-packed weekend across the Western Province Club Rugby leagues, with several key matchups shaking up the standings as teams push toward the business end of the season. The latest round of fixtures played on Saturday, 07 June 2025, delivered some thrilling contests and a few surprises, particularly in Super League A and B.

In Super League A, Villager continued their impressive run with a narrow 28–24 home win over Hamiltons in what was arguably the match of the weekend. The win sees Villager remain at the top of the table with 36 points, while Hamiltons, despite the loss, stay in the top six. False Bay also picked up a solid 28–16 win over Brackenfell, keeping their momentum going and moving them up to fourth place. Tygerberg edged Stellenbosch 23–14 in a strong home performance, while Union Milnerton were dominant in their 64–7 demolition of Kuilsrivier, scoring nine tries and securing a bonus point. The result sees Union Milnerton climb into the top 10, while Kuilsrivier remain at the bottom of the table with just one win from eight games.

Super League B saw Goodwood edge Belhar 17–14 in a tight contest that keeps Goodwood firmly in second place on the log. Franschhoek claimed a valuable 27–21 away win over Bellville, helping them climb to fifth place. Kraaifontein were ruthless at home, thrashing Kylemore 64–0 and scoring ten tries in the process. That result keeps Kraaifontein in the top four and continues Kylemore’s winless season. NTK also picked up a key 29–17 win over Hands and Heart, with five tries earning them a bonus point and helping them maintain third place. Hamlets edged Macassar 13–10 in a low-scoring affair, keeping both teams in the mid-table mix.

Super League C delivered some closely contested matches. All Saints edged Eersterivier 28–25 in a high-scoring thriller, with both teams scoring four tries and earning bonus points. All Saints remain at the top of the log with 30 points. Delft continued their strong form with a 25–20 away win over Langa, moving them into the top six. Atlantis also picked up a much-needed 21–8 win over Busy Bees, lifting them slightly up the standings. Strand beat Gardens 27–21 in another tight contest, helping them stay in the top five.

In the City League, Blue Jets were in fine form with a 36–7 win over Silverleaf, scoring six tries and securing a bonus point. Masiphumelele shut out Police 31–0 in a dominant home performance, keeping them in the top three. Elsies River United were clinical in their 50–7 win over Young Ideas, scoring eight tries and maintaining their second-place position. Blakes picked up a solid 12–0 away win over Morning Star, helping them climb into the top six.

The Northern League saw Stellenbosch-Coronations claim a 14–0 away win over Blue Stars United, keeping them in the top five. Windmeul United also secured a 14–0 win over Albions, helping them stay in the top three. Both matches were low-scoring but showed strong defensive efforts from the winning sides.

In the Southern League, Peninsula edged Retreat 28–23 in a closely fought match, keeping their hopes alive in the mid-table. The win moves Peninsula up slightly, while Retreat will be disappointed not to have taken points at home.

Metro League action saw Temperance-Cities narrowly defeat Imiqhayi 22–21 in a nail-biter. Both teams scored multiple tries, but it was the home side that held on in the end. The result keeps Temperance-Cities at the top of the standings, while Imiqhayi remain in the top four despite the loss.

Across the leagues, several trends are beginning to emerge. Villager and Watsonia continue their unbeaten runs, while teams like Kuilsrivier, Kylemore, and Titans are still searching for consistency. High-scoring matches were a theme this weekend, with multiple teams scoring over 30 points. Defensive discipline will be a key focus for coaches going forward, especially for teams leaking tries. The race for top six spots is heating up, with tight margins separating teams in the middle of the table across most leagues.
