Top six go head to head and promotion gets ever closer

After nearly six months, the rubber hits the road as we go into our first centralized finals, which sees the semi-finalists from the league in action at City Park in a full day of action this weekend.

With the majority of the rain now out of the way, City Park is ready to host six action-packed matches starting with Macassar against Hamediehs on the A field at 11:30, followed also on the A field with Van Der Stel-Evergreens up against Kraaifontein at 13:00 in Super League C.

Super League B gets underway on the A and B Field at 14:45 with Franschhoek against CPUT and SK Walmers up against Hands and Hearts.

After this week’s midweek game, which saw Maties secure their spot in the semi-finals with a win over Uni-Mil, this week we see two big matches on the cards in Super League A as Maties now face Villagers, and UCT is up against Helderberg.

This weekend will be particularly important for the teams seeking promotion as the winners are guaranteed promotion, while the losing semi-finalists will return to City Park next week to play off. The results next week will determine who will play in the promotion-relegation game on 30 September 2023.

Amidst all this action, it’s another big day for the promotion league as Manenberg Rangers face Gardens, Sir Lowrians take on Strand United, Atlantis faces Titans, and Whistling Wheels host Elsies River. These teams have, for the most part, all played six out of eight and will know that this weekend will again be a decider for those aiming to squeeze into position three to secure promotion. Strand United and Atlantis have the edge as current one and two, while Elsies or Sir Lowrians could jump to position three as Gardens, who have a game in hand.

It’s another jam-packed weekend for Women’s rugby as we see a number of our women’s rugby teams in action. Busy Bees Ladies host False Bay Ladies in what is always a tough match, and Tygerberg Ladies will be up against Blue Jets Ladies in another thriller. The Elsies River Ladies team will have the field to themselves while their male counterparts are away as they host Eerste Rivier, and Kuilsriver ladies are up against the Regional Club ladies.

With tomorrow’s club rugby extravaganza on the cards at City Park, we expect all our members to come out in their droves and remind you all to arrive early to secure parking and enjoy the festivities.

On a final note, we congratulate our WP Rugby education department on yet another successful World Rugby Level One coaching course held at Newlands last week.
