Score WP Club Rugby Sevens ready to go and coaching courses roll out

It’s a big week for WP Rugby as we see the Score WP Club Rugby Sevens formally announced, along with more coaching education, and our DHL Stormers are back home.

This week saw the formal announcement of the Score WP Club Rugby Sevens with close to forty teams entering the annual competition. The Score WP Club Rugby Sevens now runs into the eighth year of our partnership with Score Energy Drinks, which annually showcases WP Club Rugby Sevens talent. The tournament is likely the biggest sevens rugby tournament of this format in the world, with multiple clubs showcasing their Score Seven Rugby jerseys, each with their own unique designs. The designs themselves are a unique concept as clubs get to choose their own jersey templates.

Starting on 4 November 2023, and running over three weeks, the tournament unfolds at two venues across four pools during the knockout stages, with the finals scheduled for 18 November 2023. As usual, the teams, logs, results, and highlights receive additional weekly coverage on Cape Rugby TV, DStv channel 263 every Wednesday between 9-10 pm.

This past weekend saw a clash of the titans in the Paarl region in the knockout cup, with Paarl Rangers and Lower Paarl going head to head. Lower Paarl took the bragging rights with a 24-6 victory. Additionally, we saw the second teams clash as Young Standards 2 beat Young Gardens 2, 22-11.

Our club rugby action continues as several of our clubs maintain their momentum with derby matches. This week, the Paarl region is in motion with Lower Paarl facing Young Peoples at the Faure Stadium, and at the Kleinvlei Sport grounds, we see Eerste Rivier hosting Whistling Wheels.

This weekend presents another exciting opportunity for our aspiring Sevens rugby coaches as we host the World Rugby Level 2 Sevens Rugby coaching course at Newlands. With the current Sevens Rugby fever, we have no doubt that the courses will be a sellout. However, we encourage all our members to sign up and get on the list for our next courses, for which we will notify you in advance. Click here to signup now

Another fantastic opportunity for our club rugby members is the opportunity to get into rugby with our Level 1 strength and conditioning course, which starts on 3 November 2023. Strength and conditioning now play a vital role in rugby, and we already see most clubs with dedicated strength and conditioning coaches, most of them beginning their pre-season work shortly after the annual league season to prepare for the following year.

The strength and conditioning course also provides an opportunity for individuals to learn the basics of personal training, which might then lead to members of the community joining the club for fitness programs.

Our DHL Stormers go into the second round of the Vodacom United Rugby Championships this week, and this time at home as they face the Welsh side Scarlets at the Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off at 16:00. Tickets for all the upcoming matches are available at https://www.ticketpros.co.za

On a final note, we wish our Springbok Rugby team good luck for the Rugby World Cup final and encourage all our members to get behind the Bokke this weekend.
