This past Saturday saw our WP Rugby Clubs once again reunited in the Score WP Club Rugby Sevens and again showed the spirit of WP Club Rugby as we know it.
After two weeks of pool stages across three regions with more than thirty teams in action, the top two teams from each region squared off at Newlands to determine the Score WP Club Rugby Sevens Champions.
The day got started in perfect sunny conditions with Women’s Sevens teams Kraaifontein Region up against the Strand / Bellville Region followed by Busy Bees RFC against Blue Jets. Kraaifontein and Busy Bees RFC both taking the spoils in the first two matches of the Women’s Sevens round robin.
With the clubs showcasing their Score WP Club Rugby Jerseys the Score Sevens Cup first-round matches saw wins for Hands and Heart over Young Peoples, Hamilton’s RFC over Goodwood, Stellenbosch over Tygerberg, and Durbell over Gardens.
The next round of the Women’s round-robin saw Kraaifontein with a 35-15 win over Blue Jets and Busy Bees beating the Strand/Bellville Region 24-14. The Shield Semi-Finals was closely contested with some electric running rugby as Gardens scored a 19-10 win over 2019 champions Tygerberg and Young Peoples beat Goodwood 33-0.
The Cup Semi-finals saw Hands and Heart with a 12-10 win over Hamiltons and Stellenbosch beating Durbell 26-17.
In the Women’s final matches Kraaifontein scored a 31-19 win over Busy Bees to go unbeaten and the Strand/Bellville Region bounced back to beat Blue Jets 24-15.
This was a unique day for WP Club Rugby with all hands on deck including a simulcast broadcast by Cape Rugby TV with live streaming, scoring and commentary on Facebook and YouTube and broadcast live on Cape Town TV on DStv to fans, friends, and family across the world. By doing this we managed to stay connected to our club rugby members who would ordinarily have been in the stands.
The day concluded with Young Peoples beating Gardens 47-12 to win the Shield and Hamiltons beating Durbel 26-12 to win the Plate Finals.
The Score WP Club Rugby Sevens Cup final lived up to all expectations with an incredible back and forth match between and Hands and Hearts and Stellenbosch. Hands and Heart eventually closed the match out in the final seconds beating Stellenbosch 15-12 and taking the title as the 2021 Score WP Club Rugby Sevens champions.
