This week has been an exciting week for our clubs, juniors, and DHL WP Rugby u20’s.
After consultation with our clubs, we’re excited to announce the return of the Score WP Club Rugby Sevens Series. The series will roll out across multiple venues over three weeks starting on 6 November 2021 and will culminate at the iconic Newlands Stadium on 20 November 2021. This is fantastic news for our clubs who missed
out on the popular Sevens Rugby series last year. 2019 saw more than one thousand players participate over four weeks with all clubs sporting unique self-designed jerseys supported by Score Energy Drinks and weekly TV coverage on Cape Rugby TV.
Considering the interest in Sevens Rugby now is the perfect time to get qualified as an official Sevens Rugby coach. As WP Rugby we host regular coaching courses and our next World Rugby level one coaching will be held at Newlands on 19 November 2021. This is an entry-level course that requires no previous experience required. Other than a passion for the sport the only other criteria is to have completed your World Rugby passport.
You can complete the World Rugby passport online at your leisure. The course is self-explanatory with easy to complete online questions based on the information you have read during the survey.
By doing the World Rugby Passport you will be joining the global database of officially listed World Rugby members and once you have completed your course with us you will be certified with World Rugby. This process then allows for globally recognized credentials. To sign up for the Sevens course click here … and to do your World Rugby passport click here.
With the recent school holidays, we’ve seen quite a bit of activity in our youth structures ranging from planning for the annual SRSA summer games and our junior referees’ structures boosted yet again.
This past Saturday saw our WP Rugby u15 boys and girls participate in the Sevens Rugby play-offs against Boland and SWD juniors at City Park with a view to selection for the annual SRSA Summer Games at the end of the year. The Sport and Recreation South Africa games see provincial teams selected from schools in the provinces. We’re happy to say that six of our junior girls and three boys have made the team.
The recent school holidays provided time for our WP Rugby referees society to focus on our Junior Referee and saw just over thirty boys and girls aged between fourteen and eighteen participate in the junior refereeing course at the Jan Kriel Primary School in Bellville.
The event which included the opportunity for the junior boys and girls to sleepover saw the participants undergo the introduction to refereeing course and concluded with a fitness session. Additional elements included the Boksmart program and Safety for Rugby. Were excited to see these juniors come through the ranks as we deliver another generation of referees.
We would also like to congratulate WP Rugby Referee Aimee Barrett-Theron who made her United Rugby Championship debut last weekend between Benetton and Ospreys.
The round-robin-friendly matches between Faure, Blue Jets, Police, and Gardens was last weekend bolstered by False Bay Women and Stellenbosch women in Tens Rugby. This weekend sees Kraaifontein vs Bellville, Faure vs Gardens, Blue jets vs Police again go head to head in their approved friendlies.
With the move to the COVID adjusted alert level one and the recent announcement of spectators allowed again, we anticipate more clubs will be looking to play friendlies and we remind our members to ensure all friendlies are pre-approved and fall in line with the various health and safety protocols.
Our DHL WP Rugby u20 side continues to shine in the SA Rugby U20 cup. This past Saturday saw our boys run in six tries against the Vodacom Blue Bulls u20 side to score a 42-17 win and secure a place in the finals. We now travel to Johannesburg to face the Lions u20 in the finals at Emirates Airline Park on Saturday 30 October 2021. Kick-Off 13:00
Our DHL Stormers side is back home after a successful overseas leg in the Vodacom United Rugby Championships. We now next play Zebre Parma on 27 November and Cardiff on 4 December in Cape Town.
