WP Clubs gaining momentum

In Super League A, Durbell made the biggest move at the top with a commanding 54–19 home win over SK Walmers, scoring eight tries and taking the full five log points to move up to 1st place, ahead of Stellenbosch on points difference. False Bay were also convincing at home in a 40–14 victory over Union Milnerton, with six tries carrying them up to 4th, while UCT’s 27–24 home win over Villager was one of the key results in the top-six race as UCT’s four tries earned a bonus point and lifted them into 6th, with Villager slipping down to 7th despite taking two bonus points in defeat. Tygerberg stayed firmly in the leading group by beating Helderberg 26–19 at home, and Primrose edged Franschhoek 24–22 in a tight contest that gave Primrose a much-needed lift, while Brackenfell’s 25–10 home win over UWC pushed Brackenfell up to 8th. Hamiltons, without playing, dropped down the order to 5th as the teams around them collected full points.

Across Super League B, Macassar climbed to the top of the log after a strong 34–28 away win over Belhar in a match where both sides scored four tries, giving Macassar a full five-point return and Belhar two bonus points for staying within seven and reaching four tries. All Saints kept pace with a 27–15 home win over Kraaifontein and now sit 2nd, level on log points with Macassar, while Kraaifontein dropped to 4th after that defeat. Collegians were one of the weekend’s big movers, winning 19–15 away at Hamediehs to rise into 3rd, and Hands and Heart produced an important away result of their own by edging Bellville 22–19, a tight contest that slowed Bellville’s momentum near the upper half. Violets beat St Georges 38–31 at home in a lively five-tries-to-four game and closed to level points with sixth-placed St Georges, although they remain just outside the top six on points difference, while CPUT’s 25–24 home win over NTK helped them climb away from the bottom group.

Over in Super League C, the most dramatic result came at the top where Pniel Villagers beat Watsonia 39–38 at home in a thriller, with Pniel scoring five tries and Watsonia six; the defending effort was far from perfect on either side, but Pniel’s win kept them 1st while Watsonia dropped down to 5th even after collecting two bonus points. Rangers maintained their unbeaten run and held 2nd place with a 44–27 home win over Delft, while Kylemore continued their strong start by winning 36–29 away at Atlantis to stay 3rd. Scottsdene’s 36–12 home victory over Langa lifted them up to 4th, and Eersterivier’s 31–25 home win over Busy Bees was significant for the middle of the table because it moved Eersterivier up into the top six and pushed Atlantis out to 7th. Sir Lowrians also made progress with a 24–19 away win over Strand, taking a five-point haul through four tries, and Caledonian Roses got off the mark with a narrow 15–14 away win over Strand United.

The Central League saw Manenberg Rangers move to the top of the table after a controlled 31–12 home win over Northerns, with four tries securing a bonus point and enough to take Manenberg up to 1st, while Elsies River United slipped to 2nd without playing. Suburban also had a productive afternoon, beating Bishop Lavis 35–10 away and crossing for six tries, a result that lifted Suburban from 10th to 8th on the log. Northerns remain in 6th place despite the loss, but the race around the last top-six places is tight with Young Stars and Temperance-Cities still close by on the same points band. Bishop Lavis remain at the foot of the table and will be looking to start turning effort into league points in the coming rounds.

The Northern League produced another strong statement from Blue Stars United, who beat Whistling Wheels 44–21 at home with seven tries to stay 1st and strengthen their position at the head of the standings. Fisantekraal claimed one of the more important away wins of the weekend by edging Faure 30–27, scoring five tries and moving up to 3rd, above Stell/Cor, while Faure at least collected two bonus points and now sit 6th. Excelsior’s 17–6 home win over Police Blackheath was also valuable in log terms, lifting Excelsior from the lower reaches up to 7th and pushing Police Blackheath down to 10th. Whistling Wheels, after losing at Blue Stars United, dropped to 8th and now sit in a tight cluster with Morning Star and Excelsior.

In the Southern League, Masiphumelele surged to 1st place with a powerful 52–22 home win over Blue Jets, scoring eight tries and taking the full five log points to jump from 4th to the top of the standings. Blue Jets did at least manage four tries in defeat, which kept them moving with a bonus point, but they remain 5th. Peninsula and Retreat shared the points in a 27–27 draw, and because both teams also scored four tries, each side collected three log points; that leaves Peninsula 2nd and Retreat 3rd, both level with Masiphumelele on 17 in what is already becoming a very tight title race. Lagunya, without playing, slipped to 4th, while the top six itself stayed unchanged.

Paarl Region had important movement near both the top and the edge of the top six. Young Gardens stayed 1st with a 29–9 away win over Perel United, scoring four tries for a full five points, and Lower Paarl kept level with them on 21 log points after a dominant 50–8 home win over Windmeul United that included seven tries. Albions collected a valuable away result by beating Riverstones 23–22, and although Riverstones picked up a losing bonus point, they dropped from 3rd to 6th, while Albions strengthened their place in 5th. Young Standards were another side to climb, winning 43–28 over Drakenstein with six tries to move up into 4th, and that shift pushed Perel United out of the top six and down to 7th. Violets Paarl’s 50–14 win over Simondium also gave them a lift to 8th, level on points with Windmeul United just above the lower group.

Across the competitions, bonus points again had a major effect on the logs, with UCT, Durbell, False Bay, Macassar, Pniel Villagers, Rangers, Manenberg Rangers, Blue Stars United, Masiphumelele, Young Gardens and Lower Paarl all making their wins count fully. There are clear winning runs developing for teams such as Durbell, Macassar, Pniel Villagers, Blue Stars United and Manenberg Rangers, while several sides near the bottom will know that close margins and four-try returns can still keep them alive in the standings. Coaches will also note how tight many of the middle-table races are, especially where teams are level on points or separated by only one result around the top-six line.
