Multiple WP Club Rugby finals – big weekend

This weekend will be another highlight for Western Province Rugby with our first club finals since 2019, the DHL Stormers are back in action in the Vodacom URC challenge as a curtain raiser to our club finals, and our Women’s rugby sides continue.

After nearly three years since our last league championships finals, it’s all systems go this weekend as we head to multiple central venues for our various finals. Stellenbosch sees the action for Super Leagues A, B, and C with the Danie Craven stadium hosting Super League A and B, Van der Stel close by hosting Super League C, and Faure Stadium in Paarl hosting the Paarl Region’s plate and cup finals.

With all these Saturday venues close to each other and with the DHL Stormers in action at the same venue as they face Connacht for the first match of the season in the Vodacom URC championship, we expect the stadium to be jammed packed to see our exciting WP Club Rugby spectacles. Members and fans will also have the opportunity to enjoy an onsite tented beer garden and a big screen to watch the Springboks take Argentina at 17:00.

Friday sees the first of our big matches, at a centralised venue as Super Leagues B and C get the ball rolling at the Jan Burger stadium to determine the play-off place positions, with the first match of the evening at 18:45 between Macassar and Kylemore in Super League C, followed by Hands and Hearts up against Belhar at 20:15. These matches are particularly important as the third place positions will play off against the higher league log thirteenth position next weekend to determine promotion for the 2023 season.

Saturday starts early with the Super League C decider between Strand and CPUT at the Van der Stel Rugby Club in Stellenbosch at 11:30 and this gives our members and fans just about enough time to catch the start of the day’s action at the Craven Stadium as the DHL Stormers vs Connacht match kicks off at 14:30. The first big match after the DHL Stormers match is Helderberg versus St Georges at 17:00, to determine the 2022 Super League B champions, followed by False Bay against the 2019 winners Durbel at 19:00 for the Super League A title.

The Paarl Region is expecting a big day on Saturday as they head into their Plate and Cup finals at the Faure Stadium in Paarl. The day starts for the 2nd teams with Perel United vs Riverstones in the plate final, and Youngs Standards against Young Gardens in the 2nd team cup finals scheduled for 12:00 and 14:00 respectively.

The 1st team’s plate and cup finals get underway from 16:00 with Perel United up against Violets Paarl, and the old rivals Paarl Rangers against Lower Paarl. These teams have been going head-to-head all season and fans will again be excited to witness this derby.

Our Women’s League action continues this weekend and sees current log leaders Brackenfell up against False Bay while Tygerberg travels to Kuilsriver. Blue Jets, False Bay, and Tygerberg all have games in hand and will be looking to secure every point they can to secure higher league honours.
