Rugby is certainly back as we see several approved friendly fixtures, fantastic Varsity Cup and Shield performances, and our DHL Women’s Rugby squad in action.
FNB CPUT remains unbeaten in the Varsity Shield having won four from four after a solid performance, beating FNB TUT 54-20 at Loftus Versfeld in what was arguably their toughest match so far. Although a tough match our forwards managed to dominate, with credit due to our WP Rugby management team which has supported the team during their preparations. Their next match is scheduled to take place at TUKS on 2 May 2021 against FNB UKZN.
In the Varsity Cup, FNB UCT is also still unbeaten and on top of the log after beating FNB Shimlas 59-5. FNB UWC now take on FNB TUKS and UCT are up against FNB CUT next, while Maties are against the NWU Eagles this Tuesday.
In addition to many of our u20 players being in action at the Varsity Cup, we’re thrilled to let you know that we have fourteen WP Rugby u20 players selected for the SA Rugby u20 camp currently taking place in Stellenbosch.
Last week saw the trimmed-down squad of forty-four DHL Women’s Rugby players continue preparation for their first match against the Boland Women’s Rugby team on 8 May 2021 in the Inter Provincials. This upcoming match will be a first-time test for the players in the sense that the teams do not play friendlies in the build-up to the tournament, and as such our management team is keeping the squad focused on realistic game day training.
We will host our DHL Women’s Rugby squad for a team-building session at DHL Newlands this coming Saturday as we put the final plans in place.
After seeing last week’s first club rugby friendlies roll out we now several clubs preparing for organised friendlies. This is great news for rugby and certainly bodes well for the future of our clubs and their members. All club friendlies are required to be authorised and approved by the WPRFU. Any club seeking to play a friendly should apply to the WPRFU in advance, we have sent all required documentation to our clubs.
We remind everyone that our coaching courses normally have a seven-day deadline and anyone interested in signing up for the World Rugby Level One Fifteens course to be held on 7 May 2021, should do so before 30 April 2021.
Entrants are reminded to complete the World Rugby Passport and COVID awareness certification to enter the course.
We again point out that the online process allows for members to complete their activities in phases which means you can register now, do a part of the course and then return later to complete the remainder. Tuesday 4 May 2021 will see another online workshop for our clubs with a continuation of the previous successful Media, Marketing, and Sponsorship sessions. The session will now look closer at the concept of club media creation and delivery. This session will be open to our MMS members and all club delegates and is particularly important to ensure our clubs keep driving content that can entice sponsors and drive membership.
