With this weekend’s win for FNB CPUT in the Varsity Shield, several of our clubs playing their first friendlies, our DHL WP Rugby Women’s Team enjoying their first training camp and the DHL Stormers kicking off the Rainbow Cup at the Cape Town Stadium the excitement in the WP Rugby circles keeps climbing.
FNB CPUT scored a 53 -12 win over FNB UKZN this past Sunday to keep them unbeaten and firmly on top of the Varsity Shield log while FNB UCT remains the log leaders after six rounds in the Varsity Cup. Having two Western Province Clubs lead two logs in these tough competitions and all being played far from home gives us an enormous sense of pride as we see all the hard work our club coaches have put in deliver these dividends. Additionally, an excellent performance from FNB UWC saw them score a resounding 31-5 win over FNB UJ at Loftus on Friday.
Round six will now see Maties take on FNB Madibaz at TUKS while we see our two clubs FNB UCT and FNB UWC face each other at Loftus on 10 May 2021. All matches are live on SuperSport from 14:00.
Having completed the various return to play phases as per SA Rugby regulations, and after receiving clearance from the WPRFU, this weekend saw a number of club rugby friendlies. Amongst others Northerns hosted Whistling Wheels with Wheels scoring a narrow 20-19-win, Van der Stel Evergreens hosted Excelsior to win 22-5. Bellville hosted Belhar and scored a 50-29 while their u20 side beat Durbell u20 21-5.
Under normal circumstances, any Kraaifontein Hands and Heart’s match would be considered one of our biggest annual derbies. This past Friday night the spoils went to Hands and Hearts across all three sides with Hands and Heart’s first team winning 29-12.
We look forward to following the progress of our clubs as they continue to drive the spirit of WP Club Rugby even during these difficult times where matches are limited to COVID regulations and still with no spectators allowed.
This weekend was a big weekend for our DHL WP Rugby Women’s squad as they enjoyed their final team building and training session at DHL Newlands before starting the interprovincial championships at the Cape Town Stadium next weekend. The first match is scheduled against the Boland Women’s Rugby side and thereafter it will be back-to-back home and away matches each week until the finals on 17 July 2021.
The event saw the Women arrive early for breakfast and strapping after which it was a full day of training and team building before the squad ended the day with a relaxed braai and time to watch the DHL Stormers take on the Cell C Sharks in the opening match of the Rainbow Cup at the Cape Town Stadium.
We will now host the Vodacom Bulls next week, before their first match away at Emirates Airline Park where they will face the Emirates Lions on 15 May 2021.
