This weekend looks like another big weekend for Western Province club rugby. In Super League A, we see Durbell, who are currently third on the log, up against Kuilsriver, sitting at 14th. Kuilsriver went down last week to False Bay and will be looking to bounce back this week and get their first points on the board. Uni-Mil, who host NTK, are currently fourth on the log with NTK on 13th after their 19-25 loss to St. George’s last week. SK Walmers face Hamilton’s in what will be a derby match between the two neighbors. SK Walmers, who have played only four matches so far, went down to Helderberg 31-24 last week. Hamilton will know that playing against SK Walmers on the track is always a tough call. As always, fans can also look out for a big match between Brackenfell RFC and Tygerberg.
In Super League B, the match between Hamediehs and Collegians was another showcase of the amazing spirit of WP Club Rugby members and fans as the two teams went head-to-head at Vygieskraal. Although Hamediehs took the bragging rights on the day, it was truly a victory for all. This week, Hamediehs take on Strand, Hands and Hearts host Kylemore, All Saints are up against Vineyards, and Collegians host Hamlets at Primrose Park in Manenberg. This will be a tough match for both sides as former Super League A side Hamlets look to bounce back after their 26-31 loss to Kraaifontein last week. Franschhoek face an unbeaten Van der Stel, while the match between Belhar and Kraaifontein will be closely contested and although Kraaifontein are higher on the log with a high win rate Belhar are currently scoring 34 point on average when playing at home versus the 28 from Kraaifontein when they play away.
In Super League C, Blue Jets take on Gardens, Young Peoples host Strand United, and Masiphumelele travel to Primrose in Claremont. Meanwhile, Busy Bees travel to play an unbeaten and second on the log Macassar, while Atlantis face Rangers.
The City League sees Caledonian Roses as the only unbeaten side and top of the log after four matches, with Elsies River in second place after five matches. Both Elsies and Callies are equal on nineteen log points, while Violets is in third. Elsies host Manenberg Rangers and will be looking for a strong result after their 19-8 loss to Morning Star last week, while Silvertree travels to Young Ideas.
In the Southern League, Young Wesley scored a 31-12 win over Young Stars last week and this week face Northerns, who come off a 17-13 win over Titans. Titans this week face Young Stars and both teams will be looking for a solid result after their losses.
In the Northern League, Whistling Wheels, who scored a 32-15 win over Windmeul United, face Gordon Bay Pioneers, while Windmeul United travel to Raithby Universal. Raithby will be happy with their 23-22 win over Excelsior last week. Delft remain unbeaten and top of the log in the Northern League, followed by Albions and Sir Lowrians in second and third respectively, both of which will be off this weekend.
And in the Paarl region, fans in the area can expect a big match between Lower Paarl and Young Standards, and Young Gardens against Riverstones. Allendale will be looking to redeem themselves after their loss to Young Gardens last week as they host Paarl Rangers, while Simondium are up against Paarl United. Lower Paarl are unbeaten at the top of the log after seven matches, with Paarl Rangers, Young Gardens, and Riverstones making up the next three on the log.
The Metro League has a full house of fixtures this weekend. Kayalitsha face Silverleaf, Thistles host La-Motte Wanderers, Imiqhayi host Progress, and look out for another derby this weekend as Perseverance face Temperance and Cities. Both teams will be looking for the win after last week’s battle, while Progress are holding their heads high after taking the derby bragging rights in their 29-12 win over Perseverance last week.
Division One in the Women’s League has Blue Jets hosting Tygerberg, Busy Bees hosting Bellville, and False Bay traveling to Brackenfell. False Bay is currently the only unbeaten side in Division One. CPUT women are unbeaten on top of the log. This weekend sees Eersterivier women face Kuilsriver, and Maties face second-place Elsies River United, who are also unbeaten.
Last week Saturday saw a remarkable turnout for our WP Rugby Referees course hosted at Brackenfell Primary School. This World Rugby referees level one course provided the opportunity for several enthusiastic members to stay involved in the game, and we look forward to more of these courses as we grow the base of referees in Western Province.
