The WP Women’s Rugby trials, held at the HPC last week, were a significant success. The trials attracted a notable number of participants, showcasing the growing interest and talent in women’s rugby within the Western Province. The positive feedback received from these trials underscores the enthusiasm and potential among our female athletes.
Additionally, the upcoming second round of trials for our Women’s rugby players at the WP Rugby HPC this weekend is another important event. Following the success of the initial trials, this session aims to further assess and develop the skills of our women players, with activities planned to measure basic biometrics, gym performance, and on-field capabilities.
To complement our women’s rugby programme and commitment to the growth of women’s rugby, our club rugby department will be hosting weekly Saturday morning fitness and gym training sessions at the WP Rugby High Performance Centre in Bellville. This is an exciting opportunity for our women who then get to experience a higher level of exposure firsthand.
Furthermore, the WP Rugby referees society workshop regarding the new laws for amateur rugby was well-received. Held at the Sports Science Institute in Newlands, the attendance was impressive, reflecting the coaches’ commitment to staying updated with the latest rugby laws and ensuring that our games are played under the most current rules.
As we head toward the start of the season, we look forward to hosting our club at the annual forum meetings, starting with the leagues on 13 February 2024, followed by regions on 20 February 2024. These sessions are vital for club delegates as our club rugby department presents the draft fixtures.
This weekend’s schedule includes several friendlies, such as UCT hosting Boland and Maties playing against the DHL Stormers as they prepare for the Varsity Cup, and Watsonia traveling to Gardens while Young Stars travel to Excelsior. These matches are eagerly anticipated, providing teams with valuable match practice and the opportunity to refine their strategies for the season ahead.
The World Rugby coaching course registrations have also seen a positive turnout, with numerous sign-ups demonstrating the clubs’ proactive approach to coaching development. Our next course is the World Rugby Level One coaching course to be held at Newlands on 16 February 2024.
