After last week’s league semi-finals at City Park, which saw the top four in each league go head to head, our WP Club Rugby league now goes into the finals to determine the league champions.
Last week saw some incredible club rugby in a day filled with typical club rugby entertainment and action at City Park, giving the fans a full day of value.
Last week Saturday started off early with Hamediehs taking the win against Macassar, followed by Van der Stel – Evergreens beating Kraaifontein, with the result being that Hamediehs and Van Der Stel (13:10) now play for the title of Super League C this Saturday.
It’s, however, not over for Macassar and Kraaifontein (10:30) as they go head to head to see who goes through to play in the promotion-relegation game against Primrose next week.
Super League B tomorrow sees CPUT up against SK Walmers (14:30) after their respective wins over Franschhoek and Hands and Hearts (11:50). Meanwhile, the latter two teams will square off for the chance to play NTK for possible promotion into Super League A.
It’s now almost a year since our last finals and tomorrow is expected to deliver another thriller as Helderberg faces Maties in the finals (15:50). This after Helderberg beat UCT and Maties scored a close win over Villagers.
All the league finals and playoffs will be streamed live on the SuperSport Schools app and DSTV SuperSport Variety 3, with the first match kicking off at 10:30 through to the finals at 15:50, with match reviews and highlights on Cape Rugby TV on Cape Town TV DStv ch263 next week, Wednesday at 21:00.
While the action continues at City Park, False Bay will host the Naka Bulls in the Gold Cup at Philip Herbstein this after their win over Wesbank last week. UCT will be defending their World Rugby Universities title in France starting this week, and Hamiltons RFC are also competing in the World Amateur Rugby Festival also taking place in France.
The promotion league goes into possibly deciding matches this weekend, with Strand United and Atlantis already guaranteed promotion regardless of their outcome in their respective matches against Sir Lowrians and Whistling Wheels. But for Elsies River and Gardens, this weekend is crucial. Gardens have already concluded their fixtures and are currently in third place. This could, however, change if Elsies Rivier scores a 5-point win with a twelve-point margin over Young Wesleys and if Strand United beats Young Wesleys, thereby squashing their chances of a third-place finish even with a game in hand.
Young Gardens secured their title as Paarl Region champions last week with their win over Riverstones, and the final positions now see Young Gardens in first, followed by Young Standards and Lower Paarl in third. The weekend sees one final match in the Paarl Region between Violets Paarl and Riverstones.
Fans can also note that the Paarl region will host their 7s tournament on Monday 25 September at Faure Stadium from 9am, and Busy Bees celebrate their centenary this weekend as part of the festivities.
