Western Province rugby is brimming with pride as we saw a significant amount of success for our junior boys and girls and our clubs continue to show the passion of Western Province Club Rugby.
Our DHL WP Rugby Craven week side went unbeaten at the SA Rugby U-18 Craven week held in Cape Town last week with our boys beating the Blue Bulls 29-17 in the final match. On the u18 front we see five WP Rugby players selected for the SA Schools side who will now play their first match in Cape Town this weekend.
This success at the Craven week comes on the back of the Grant Khomo week in Kimberly and the SA Rugby girls week in Welkom, both of which events saw a tremendous amount of success for our juniors, including our U18 girls winning the girls week.
Next week 23 July 2022 will see the start of our WP Club Rugby Women’s Rugby league which will see a number of clubs with women’s sides in the competition. After the recent string of women’s rugby activities such as the Women’s rugby festivals and the success of our juniors as well as the continuation of our High-Performance coaching courses for women, this is an exciting time for WP Women’s rugby.
Additional Women’s rugby excitement is also on the cards for our selected YTC U20 Women’s players who completed their trails at City Park this past Wednesday and now begin preparations for the SA Rugby YTC games set to play out from 5-7 August 2022.
On the senior front, it’s all systems go again as we see our U21 and URC squads return to training at the HPC in Bellville. Next week Wednesday sees the DHL WP Rugby U21 squad gather in preparation for the SA Rugby U21 Currie Cup which starts on 20 August 2022 to end October 2022 while our DHL Stormers also gather on the same day in preparation for the Heineken Cup.
Our WP Club Rugby season is now heading well into the business end of the league with every match now vital as teams scramble for the top six and some seek to avoid relegation.
Last weekend saw Gordons Bay Pioneers beat Fisantekraal to win the Metro League, and this weekend saw victory for Hamediehs over Masipumelele to win the City League. This then concluded the final matches of the regional teams while the Paarl Region continues to play in their second round with the home and away format.
Next week will see the annual WP Club Rugby Top 9 draw to determine the home games for the top 9 competition which sees the top three from the City, Southern and Northern leagues go head to head.
This year also sees an exciting tournament for our Metro league teams who will face the teams who finished between positions four and nine in the regional leagues and will now play out in a second-round competition.
Our World Rugby level two coaching course was presented at the HPC in Bellville this weekend with our next course being the World Rugby level one coaching course scheduled for 29 July 2022. All these courses will be held at the High-performance centre in Bellville and the signup deadline is one week prior to the course.
