This past weekend’s Western Province Club Rugby action delivered another exciting round of fixtures as clubs moved one step closer to the conclusion of the league phase of the competition. Across the divisions there were statement victories, surprise results and valuable bonus points, but with only a limited number of league fixtures remaining, the attention has firmly shifted to the race for the Top 8 in the Super Leagues. Every remaining match now carries added significance, with playoff qualification becoming the priority for many clubs.
Super League A produced several of the weekend’s biggest talking points. Helderberg continued their outstanding campaign with a convincing 48-21 home victory over Stellenbosch, running in six tries to remain second on the log. With only one league fixture remaining in their programme, Helderberg have effectively secured their place in the Top 8 and will now be looking to carry momentum into the playoff phase once the league competition concludes.
Tygerberg continued their strong run with a comfortable 31-10 victory over Primrose to strengthen their hold on sixth place, while False Bay climbed into seventh after an entertaining 54-34 away victory over UWC in which they crossed the try line eight times. Brackenfell produced one of the performances of the round, defeating Franschhoek 45-25 away from home to move into ninth place and remain firmly in contention for a Top 8 finish.
One of the most entertaining encounters of the weekend unfolded at the Green Mile where Kuilsrivier edged UCT 49-47 in a remarkable fourteen-try contest. Both teams secured attacking bonus points, while UCT also earned a losing bonus after scoring seven tries. Although defeated, UCT remain well in the hunt for a playoff place, with only a handful of points separating several clubs in the race for the final Top 8 positions.
With only five log points available from each remaining fixture, opportunities to climb the standings are becoming increasingly limited. For some clubs, a place in the Top 8 is almost secure, while for others there is little room left for error as the league phase approaches its conclusion.
Super League B also saw important movement near the top of the standings. Belhar retained first place after edging Hamlets 24-22 at home, collecting a valuable bonus point in the process. Kraaifontein consolidated second place with a convincing 33-17 away victory over St Georges, while CPUT produced one of the most impressive performances of the weekend, overpowering Vineyards 40-7 away from home to climb into third place.
NTK strengthened their own playoff ambitions with a convincing 34-10 victory over Bellville to move into fifth place, while Macassar surrendered valuable ground after being held to a 27-27 draw by Violets. Hands and Heart remain sixth, but the chasing pack continues to apply pressure with Collegians sitting just outside the playoff positions and Violets moving into eighth ahead of All Saints.
Super League C also produced movement among the leading teams. Pniel Villagers travelled to Kylemore and secured an impressive 24-20 victory to move into third place, while Kylemore slipped to fourth. Eersterivier continued their excellent campaign with a seven-try 47-27 away victory over Scottsdene to strengthen their position inside the Top 6.
Sir Lowrians remained firmly in contention after defeating Raithby Universals 21-10, while Langa’s hard-fought 34-29 away victory over Delft lifted them further away from the bottom of the standings. One of the biggest surprises of the weekend came when Atlantis travelled to second-placed Watsonia and secured a dramatic 30-29 victory. Watsonia collected two valuable bonus points to remain second, while Atlantis celebrated one of their most significant victories of the season.
Busy Bees produced the biggest score of the weekend across all competitions, running in eleven tries during an emphatic 80-12 victory over Caledonian Roses. Although they remain in fourteenth place, the result significantly reduced the gap to the teams immediately above them.
There was limited action in the Central League, but Young Stars strengthened their hold on third place with a determined 17-10 victory over Silvertree, ensuring they remain in touch with the leading pair heading into the closing weeks of the league competition.
The Northern League continues to provide one of the closest playoff races. Whistling Wheels recorded an impressive 51-14 away victory over Excelsior to move themselves closer to the Top 6, while Faure edged Morning Star 22-20 in one of the closest contests of the weekend. Stell/Cor also maintained sixth place with a convincing 37-12 victory over Police Blackheath, although the chasing teams remain well within striking distance.
The Paarl Region also remains tightly contested. Lower Paarl maintained their position at the top after edging Albions 32-30, collecting the full five log points through a four-try performance. Young Standards strengthened their hold on sixth place after defeating Riverstones 17-15, creating a valuable cushion over the chasing clubs while Riverstones remained third after collecting a losing bonus point.
The Southern League title race remains equally competitive. Blue Jets retained first place after edging Masiphumelele 20-19 away from home, while Retreat stayed within touching distance after a solid 29-16 victory over Peninsula. Lagunya strengthened their hold on sixth place with a bonus-point victory over Imiqhayi, while Rocklands consolidated fifth after defeating Young Wesleys 21-15.
With only a limited number of league fixtures remaining, the focus has now shifted almost entirely to playoff qualification. In the Super Leagues especially, clubs are no longer simply chasing teams above them on the standings—they are battling to secure one of the coveted Top 8 positions that will extend their campaigns into the knockout rounds. For some clubs, qualification is already within reach, while others have very little margin for error. With only five log points available from each remaining league fixture, every result from this point forward will help determine the final Top 8, home-ground advantage for the playoffs, and which clubs continue their pursuit of Western Province Club Rugby honours once the league phase gives way to knockout rugby.
