Close challenges in the annual Score WP Club Rugby Sevens tournament.

The annual Score WP Club Rugby Sevens tournament got off to a fantastic start this past week with just under fifty teams back in action.

The annual event which is now a highlight of the WP Club Rugby calendar attracts clubs from all over Western Province to participate in the three-week series across three central venues in Western Province.

This year sees the tournament again sporting just under one thousand players with clubs playing across six groups in three regions.

The Southern Region hosted at City Park, Northern Region hosted at Goodwood RFC, and the Stellenbosch/Paarl Region at the Charles Morkel Stadium in Somerset West.

The top two teams from each group in each region will go through to the finals to be hosted at the Villagers RFC on 5 November 2022.

Many of the WP Club Rugby teams have now become focussed on sevens rugby and already we see some of the regulars in dominant positions.

The Southern Region sees Group A’s False Bay and SK Walmers leading the pack, while Hamilton’s and Uni-Mil are leading in Group B with Primrose hot on their heels.

The Stellenbosch/ Paarl Region which is playing out at the Helderberg’s Charles Morkel stadium has Maties and Young Peoples on the front foot in Group C, while Group D has a tight contest between Macassar, Helderberg, and Franshoek.

At the Goodwood sports grounds and the Northern Region things will go down to the wire in Group E with UWC, Durbel, Kuilsriver and Belhar in the top four. Group F seems likely to have the closest call as Tygerberg and Hands and Hearts, both former champions are contested in the top four by Brackenfell and NTK.

The Score WP Club Rugby Sevens again sees our clubs adorned in their unique Score Sevens jerseys after the clubs supplied their own designs kindly manufactured by CTC Sports.

All matches start at the three venues at 13:00 with much entertainment and excitement on the cards for our rugby fans.
