Score WP Club Rugby Sevens reunites at Newlands

This past Saturday saw our WP Rugby Clubs once again reunited in the Score WP Club Rugby Sevens and again showed the spirit of WP Club Rugby as we know it.

After two weeks of pool stages across three regions with more than thirty teams in action, the top two teams from each region squared off at Newlands to determine the Score WP Club Rugby Sevens Champions.

The day got started in perfect sunny conditions with Women’s Sevens teams Kraaifontein Region up against the Strand / Bellville Region followed by Busy Bees RFC against Blue Jets. Kraaifontein and Busy Bees RFC both taking the spoils in the first two matches of the Women’s  Sevens round robin.

With the clubs showcasing their Score WP Club Rugby Jerseys the Score Sevens Cup first-round matches saw wins for Hands and Heart over Young Peoples, Hamilton’s RFC over Goodwood, Stellenbosch over Tygerberg, and Durbell over Gardens.

The next round of the Women’s round-robin saw Kraaifontein with a 35-15 win over Blue Jets and Busy Bees beating the Strand/Bellville Region 24-14. The Shield Semi-Finals was closely contested with some electric running rugby as Gardens scored a 19-10 win over 2019 champions Tygerberg and Young Peoples beat Goodwood 33-0.

The Cup Semi-finals saw Hands and Heart with a 12-10 win over Hamiltons and Stellenbosch beating Durbell 26-17.

In the Women’s final matches Kraaifontein scored a 31-19 win over Busy Bees to go unbeaten and the Strand/Bellville Region bounced back to beat Blue Jets 24-15.

This was a unique day for WP Club Rugby with all hands on deck including a simulcast broadcast by Cape Rugby TV with live streaming, scoring and commentary on Facebook and YouTube and broadcast live on Cape Town TV on DStv to fans, friends, and family across the world. By doing this we managed to stay connected to our club rugby members who would ordinarily have been in the stands.

The day concluded with Young Peoples beating Gardens 47-12 to win the Shield and Hamiltons beating Durbel 26-12 to win the Plate Finals.

The Score WP Club Rugby Sevens Cup final lived up to all expectations with an incredible back and forth match between and Hands and Hearts and Stellenbosch. Hands and Heart eventually closed the match out in the final seconds beating Stellenbosch 15-12 and taking the title as the 2021 Score WP Club Rugby Sevens champions.

Score WP Club Rugby Sevens on again

After an overwhelming number of clubs applied to play in the Score WP Club Rugby Sevens our process on securing venues, teams, players, and several additional logistics concluded and the Score WP Clugby Rugby series is again up and running.

The Score WP Club Rugby Sevens series got off to a bang across three venues this weekend with Paarl

(Faure Street), Goodwood RFC and Hamilton’s RFC playing host. The series sees thirty-three teams playing in four pools and the top two from each pool playing in the finals at Newlands on 20 November 2021. Highlights of all three venues on all days will be broadcast on Cape Rugby TV every Wednesday from 21:00 on Cape Town TV, DStv ch263.

As before the creative process at clubs has been fascinating to watch as our clubs have again been given the opportunity to select their own unique Jersey designs. This weekend saw the clubs sporting their sublimated Jerseys with logo, colour and design courtesy of CTC Sports and Score Energy Drinks and as before this added to the excitement of the series.

Last weekend saw more than a hundred and sixty junior girls participating in the final Girls YTC Festival for 2021 at City Park. The days included girls u14, u16 and u18 playing Sevens rugby and as usual, the day was a great success with lots of fun had by all. We congratulate our administrators on the sterling work they have done to support and drive the junior girl’s structures and we have no doubt that together with our WP Rugby Women’s Collective and the additional focus on the growth of Women’s Rugby our Women and Girls structures will grow to the next level.

Much of the success of this drive has come from the concept of ensuring all clubs have a Women’s Rugby representative. For those clubs who have not yet appointed a representative to focus on growing the Women and Girls structures at their clubs, we remind you to please allocate someone at your club. As you can see from the evidence these structures are not dependent on having a club women’s team and guaranteed fixtures but provides a platform to create opportunity. If you would like to sign up as a representative for your club please click here.

Don’t forget to sign up for your World Rugby Level One Sevens coaching course which takes place on 19 November 2021. With Sevens Rugby being the talk of the town at this time of year and considering the simplified format and that Sevens Rugby is the perfect way to get started in rugby now is a good time to learn the basics of coaching rugby.

Our Level one coaches are reminded to sign up for their World Rugby Level One course now. You can use this form to sign up for either course.

After a number of weeks, the Friendly Cup between Blue Jets, Gardens, Faure and Police finally concluded at Gardens RFC. Last Saturday saw four matches between the first and second teams with the result in the Plate final going in favour of Police as they beat Faure and the Cup Final saw a win for Blue Jets over Gardens.
We’re excited to announce that five DHL WP Rugby players have been called up to play in the Carling Championships match to face Kenya at Loftus Versfeld this coming weekend. The selection comes after a unique process that saw the fans make their voices heard as they were able to vote for their favourite players using various digital and social media platforms.
