The WPRFU Score Sevens presented by African Bank ended with much fanfare and some excellent WP Rugby skills at CPUT this past weekend with Tygerberg RFC crowned as the sevens champions for the second year running.
After playing through four weeks of pool stages the top sixteen teams ended up playing in the Cup, Plate Shield and Bowl competitions with prize money on offer for several of the teams.
Tygerberg scored a 25-5 victory over Kuilsriver in their opening match before beating Hamiltons 24-5 in the quarter finals and then beating UWC 22-0 in the Cup Semi-finals to eventually end up as overall champions with a 14-0 win over Maties.
After losing their first match of the day to Belhar, False Bay went on to beat Young Peoples 14-7 in the Shield Semi-finals before beating Kuilsriver 12-5 in the Shield Finals.
Former champions Bellville walked away as the Plate Champions after beating Hamiltons 24-5 in the Plate final.
After losing their opening match to Maties, Goodwood went on to beat Uni-Mil 24-7 in the semi-finals and then winning the Bowl with a 31-7 win over Albions.
Not only did Tygerberg walk away as the overall champions but as was expected also with the bragging rights of having the player with the most points on the board. With most points and most tries scored during the tournament Tygerberg’s Rossco Syster was crowned as player of the tournament.
As overall champions Tygerberg also walked away with R10000 in prize money.
The WPRFU Score Sevens presented by African Bank this year went into it’s fifth year and again showed the success of the event. With just under fifty teams and close on one thousand players, in what we believe to be the world’s biggest organizational Sevens Rugby Tournament we are very happy to say that there is no doubt that the demand for this event is growing. We look forward to putting on an even greater show next year.
