WPRFU News Update 31st March
WPRFU News Update 31st March
The 2017 WP Club Rugby season kicks off this Saturday and the excitement amongst clubs, players, fans, and administrators has reached fever pitch.
It has been a long pre-season for our clubs, some of whom will continue their preparation due to a delayed start.
There are some great games to look forward to tomorrow afternoon.
In Super League A, Union-Milnerton face a tough test of their credentials when they take on Durbell at Theo Marais Park. Brackenfell host SK Walmers in a repeat of last year’s opener, while the clash of the weekend will undoubtedly be False Bay trip to Green Point to take on Hamiltons.
In Super League B, St Georges host Rangers at Gustrouw, Villager travel to Sir Lowrians, while Paarl are in Lentegeur to take on Collegians.
There is plenty to look forward to in Super League C this Saturday. Macassar host high-flying Vineyards who are making their Super League C debut. Hamediehs host All Saints at Vygieskraal, Busy Bees take on Strand United in Strand while Lagunya host Young Stars.
In selected games in the regional leagues, Whistling Wheels take on Eersterivier in a local derby in the Southern League, Blakes host Blue Jets in the Northern League, and Watsonia host Young Ideas in the City League.
The Paarl region gets back underway on Saturday with reigning champions Lower Paarl taking on Perel United and Allandal hosting Windmeul United.
Best of luck to all teams playing this weekend, you have worked hard for this so do not leave anything on the field!
A final word of thanks must go to the WP Club Rugby department who has spent countless hours drawing up the fixtures for the upcoming season. It is not always easy to accommodate 110 clubs but our staff has done outstanding work in ensuring a fair fixture list for all.
The WPRFU Coaching department has been hard at work this past week. On Wednesday night an informative rules session was held at Helderberg Rugby Club where club rugby coaches were informed of the new rule changes for the upcoming season.
Furthermore, the High Performance coaches continue with their courses as they look to reach the upper echelons of coaching in WP and beyond.
In Women’s Rugby news, The WP senior women have been holding trials at City Park this week as they prepare for the squad announcement in the coming weeks.
The WP Schools Day took place on Tuesday at DHL Newlands. Our provinces best schools were all involved in another successful day for Youth Rugby. With the National Weeks coming up sooner rather than later, this was ideal preparation as our Youth Rugby selectors begin to pick their teams.
The DHL Stormers are back home this weekend as they take on the Cheetahs at DHL Newlands on Saturday. Kickoff is at 15h00 and the DHL Newlands faithful will once again be rocking as they welcome their local heroes after a fortnight away.
