WPRFU News Update 26th July

The WP U18 Craven Week and Academy Week sides returned from St Stithians College in Johannesburg after a week of intense rugby action.
The DHL Western Province u18 Craven Week team started their tournament like champions when they overpowered the Pumas 36-10 and ended the 2nd day with an epic draw against the Lions (13 all) before losing the final clash against the Free State (33-54).

The DHL Western Province u18 Academy Week team started their campaign strongly when the team beat the Blue Bulls 38-31, the Sharks 50-36 before being pipped in the final match against a Free State (37-49).

The DHL Western Province senior women’s team got their interprovincial competition off to a flyer and is still unbeaten after 2 rounds of the competition.

In their first game they beat the Blue Bulls 41-13 at Loftus Versveld followed by a strong showing against Kwazulu-Natal away in Durban running out winners 25-0.

In HUBS news, the HUBS regional team from Athlone hosted Khayalitsha's u15, u19 boys, and u18 girls team at City Park in a full morning and afternoon of rugby.

The HUBS development program continues to make the sport more accessible to all parts of the province. Last week, two Hubs coaches went to help Islamia High School with a training session as they prepare themselves for a upcoming annual Sevens tournament in Malaysia which will be in December.

Islamia is also affiliated with The HUBS project and some of their boys are playing for the HUBS regional teams. Ex-Springbok Jongi
Nokwe had some words to share with the boys after the session to help motivate them ahead of the tournament.

The High Performance Coaches continue their courses at HPC under the tutelage of High Performance Manager Jerome Paarwater. The very best club rugby coaches have benefited immensely from the experience.

Club-wise, another exciting round of WP Club Rugby action took place over the weekend with the standout results being Durbell’s 24 – 22 win over Hamiltons, All Saints edging out Scottsdene 22 – 21, while Blue Jets maintained their 100% record with a 41 – 27 away win at Van der Stel/Evergreens.

The DHL WP Currie Cup team kicks off their campaign on Sunday when they travel to Bloemfontein to take on the Cheetahs. As the most successful team in the tournament’s history with 33 titles, WP will no doubt be looking to start their campaign on a high before returning to DHL Newlands to take on the Pumas on August 5th.
