WPRFU News Update 12th May

It has been a busy time at the WPRFU with several of our departments working round the clock to ensure the smooth running of their portfolios.
The WP u19 trials took place on Monday night at City Park where 2 matches took place. Talent identified in these trials will be invited to join the broader training group for the WP u19 team.

Furthermore, the BestMed WP School of Excellence held trials for the U16 and u18 teams at City Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The regional trials for the WP Emerging squad took place a fortnight ago at City Park. Further trials will be held with clubs in the SLC to select a representative team that will play against the regional selected from the Southern, City, Northern and Paarl leagues. From this fixture a final training squad will be selected.

From this group the additional team representing WP Rugby at the SARU APC Tournament (south) in August will be selected.

The final squad will be circulated to the clubs in the coming week. Thanks to the selectors who have spent countless hours fine-tuning what is shaping up to be a fantastic squad.

In WP Women’s news, The WP girl’s U16 and U18 trails will take place today at City Park starting at 14h30. This Friday the regional WP Women’s fixtures will continue to roll out.

In Schools news, the much anticipated Mini Rugby day will take place on Saturday from 07h00 at HTS Bellville with 93 schools, 277 teams and 3174 players already confirmed to take place.

This event would not be possible without the support of valued sponsors Spur Steak Ranches, Genuine Connection and Peninsula Beverages who do so much for the WP Schools Rugby Department.
WPRFU President Thelo Wakefield and various other EXCO members together with several senior professional DHL Stormers players will also be attending the event to support the young boys.

The HUBS development program continues to gather steam. 6 HUBS regional teams played their 1st fixtures v Settlers on Saturday in Bellville and what a spectacle of community rugby we saw. The boys enjoyed themselves and look forward to similar games in the next few weeks.

The fourth round of the WP Club Rugby season took place on Saturday with several eye-catching results.

DHL Western Province scored five tries in a hard-fought 35-28 SuperSport Rugby Challenge victory against Boland Cavaliers in Velddrif on Saturday.

There is plenty rugby action this weekend for supporters young and old to enjoy. Be sure to check in with your local club and support community rugby!
