WP Club Rugby News

20/06/2018
There are no easy games in WP Club Rugby. In Super League A, Tygerberg managed to bounce back somewhat after their recent close loss to NTK as they beat Villagers 26-15.

Belhar are still struggling to get the bogey off their back and this weekend was no different after their 28-22 loss to newly promoted St Georges. Hamiltons moved to third on the log after beating NTK 38-19.

The clash between Maties and False Bay is surely the pick of the week in Super League A. Maties are the 2017 Champions, while False Bay are the current Gold Cup Champions. Both teams have rested with Maties having been on study break, while Coach Jonno van der Walt’s False Bay outfit are back after a bye. False Bay will be looking to regain some pride after their one point loss to Maties in 2017. The match between Union Milnerton and Hamiltons will no doubt go down to the wire. Interestingly this match is being played at the Pinelands Rugby grounds as Hamiltons have decided to rest their field for another week. Hamiltons would have had home ground advantage and this might just favour Union Milnerton Coach Isma-eel Dollie and his team.

In Super League B Kuilsrivier moved to second on the log after their 25 all draw to Helderberg. Franschhoek scored a big 44-3 win over Hamlets. Many would have expected more points on the board from Hamlets. Bellville showed that their recent one point win over Franschhoek was well deserved as they beat Kraaifontein 29-22.

Vineyards versus Primrose must be the pick in Super League B this weekend, both teams are back from their break and there is no doubt that this will be a close game. Vineyards had a good 2017 season and relegated Primrose will want to show their potential with Coach and former DHL WP Rugby player Rito Hlongwane back at the helm.

Super League C this past weekend saw a fantastic youth day initiative at the Police sport grounds in Pinelands where the club was raising funds for their facility. The day included a live broadcast by Good Hope FM. It was fitting that the match played was the two log leaders Police and Masiphumemele. It was however Coach Warren Edward’s side, Masiphumelele who came out on top with a 29-14 win. This win keeps them firmly on top of the log.

Macassar are still on a 100% strike rate with three from three as they beat Scottsdene Central 34-21. Langa now jump into second spot after beating Sir Lowrians 57-12. Goodwood still had enough points in the bag to stay in second after losing 35-29 to Kylemore.

The City League is the league with the most games in hand. The Silvertree vs Watsonia as well as Caledonian Roses vs Hamediehs games promise to have a derby feel as these clubs return after Ramadaan and will take to the field for the first time this year.

In the Northern League, Raithby Universals top the log after their 43-16 win over Van der Stel Evergreens. Notable big games in this league is the derby between Stellenbosch Coronations and Blakes, while log runners up Whistling Wheels host log leaders Raithby Universals.

In the Southern League Morning Star and Atlantis played to a 22 all draw which keeps them at one and two on the log respectively. Retreat jump to three on the log after their 32-9 win over Silverleaf. Retreat will be looking to climb the log from third place as they square off with fourth place Peninsula this weekend.

I’d like to congratulate all our Junior players on their caps for 2018 as they prepare for the upcoming Coca-Cola national Youth Weeks. The event took place at a glittering event at the Cape Town stadium this past Wednesday.

The DHL Western Province U16 team to play in the Coca-Cola U16 Grant Khomo Week at Hoerskool Diamantveld in Kimberley will be captained by Armand Maritz from Paul Roos, while Juan Loots will captain DHL Western Province U13 at the Coca-Cola U13 Craven Week at the same venue.
