WP Club Rugby News

It’s been yet another year of accolades for the Western Province Rugby Football Union at the annual Cape Town Sport awards. The event held at UWC on Wednesday evening saw the WPRFU again win the Sport Federation of the year.
DHL WP Rugby player Damian Willemse was crowned as newcomer of the year, Aimee Barrett Theron won the award for Technical Excellence, and Junior Sportman of the year went to DHL WP Rugby player Salmaan Moerat and DHL WP Rugby coach John Dobson was again crowned as Coach of the year. All these winners are now candidates for the Western Cape Provincial Sports Awards.
This past weekend saw some interesting results which some might have predicted differently. In Super League A, Villagers scored a 50-24 win over SK Walmers who recently beat top of the log side Hamiltons. In Super League B, Pniel Villagers beat Kuilsriver 36 -31, while Collegians did well to hold third place Hamlets to a 27 all draw. By all accounts Strand United should have had the upper hand in their match against Young Wesleys in Super League C, but it ended with a 27-20 win for the latter.
We are now clearly in the second half of the season and the clubs in Super League A, B and C are already doing their calculations with an eye on the top six. At the end of the first round we’ll see these leagues go into the knockout rounds to ultimate decide the league winners. The ever looming threat of relegation remains as strong as ever. Although UWC will be happy that they have their first win on the board having beaten St Georges 18-15 in their midweek game, they will need to capitalise on their games in hand.
In Super League A the pick of the week must be UCT vs False Bay. Even though UCT have several games to catch up with, they are unbeaten and False Bay will know that UCT beat the ever dominant Stellenbosch early in the season.
We expect a big match between All Saints and Helderberg in Super League B. With both teams playing in the Helderberg basin it will be a derby atmosphere. Highlights of the match can be viewed next week on Cape Rugby TV, Wednesday at 9pm on DSTV ch 263 on Cape Town TV.
If it’s a derby match you’re looking for, Strand United hosts Macassar in Super League C. In the City League we’ll see two teams from the same home ground up against each other as Perseverance take on Progress at City Park. These two teams will certainly be playing for pride in their annual clash. Perseverance in particular will want to score a victory here, as they have yet to score a win this season.
In the Southern League, Retreat scored a 29-0 win over Bishop Lavis on Thursday night. The match was scheduled to an earlier day as Retreat celebrates their one hundred and twentieth year as a club this Saturday. The day will see a host of activities including three junior games in the morning, two senior matches and a veterans match in the afternoon and the final match against historical rivals Young Standards.
In the Southern League it will be a tense affair between Stellenbosch Coronations and Blue Stars. Blue Stars come off a tough 33 – 39 loss to log leaders and rivals Van Der Stel-Evergreens and will want to bounce back. “Stel Cor” will be no doubt be in a running mood after their big margin win over Delft.
In the Paarl League it’s a pride match between Perel United and Violets with both teams having had a shaky season against some very tough opposition. Certainly both teams can walk away with their heads held high.
This week Labeeb Levy and his team will be hosting their coaching workshop at Newlands. We congratulate all the coaches attending the workshop in advance. There is always a need to stay up to date with coaching techniques, but more importantly we’ll see more coaches qualify and get taken up into the coaching ranks of the WPRFU.
