Official start around the corner. Coaches and referees options open

29/03/2019
We are now one week away from the start of the official league season. Behind the scenes our WPRFU staff have been working tirelessly to ensure a smooth start, this includes several forum meetings with the various leagues and divisions.

The first weekend will see just over 179 WP Club Rugby matches take place across eight leagues and more than 2400 fixed matches planned thus far for the season. If the friendly fixture spirit is anything to go by, we expect yet another thrilling season.

This past weekend again saw a number of friendlies played out across the province including a number of derbies and annual challenge matches.

Young Gardens travelled to City Park to play Temperance Cities in their annual derby which goes back to 1998, Gardens walked away with the bragging rights for another year.

Blue Stars United who has recently been promoted to Super League C from the Northern League played neighbours Franschhoek.  Even though Blue Stars lost 38-33, they made a good comeback from half time when they were trailing 21-7. This is a good result for Blue Stars as Franschhoek under the guidance of coach Jaco Stadler are good contenders for Super League B this year. See more friendly results below

If you think teams would rest in the final week before season start, you are sorely mistaken.  There are quite a few friendlies on the cards for this weekend, which goes to show just how hungry our teams are to play and take their final opportunity for last minute touch-ups.

Included this weekend is the annual derby between South Africa’s two oldest rugby clubs. Villagers and Hamiltons square off in their traditional pre-season match that was first played in 1876. The fixture rotates annually and this weekend sees Hamiltons hosting the event in Sea Point. See more friendly fixtures below

After their 69-40 win over UKZN, CPUT is currently 2nd on the log in the Varsity Shield, having won five of their six matches.

This week coming week Thursday CPUT host Walter Sisulu University at the CPUT sport grounds, all WP Rugby fan are asked to come down and support. Kick off 16:45
