Friendlies and School action

15/03/2019
This past week has been indicative of just how exciting and rewarding WP Rugby can be. On Tuesday we had fourteen school rugby teams in action at Newlands with teams from clubs and high schools.

The day saw the teams play in a 20 minutes per half format with only two minutes between halves, and no conversions. The format delivered a high energy day of rugby and judging by the crowd noise, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

We have just over thirty endorsed friendly fixtures planned for this weekend, with most of the Boland teams this time travelling to Cape Town. As always we are most grateful for the relationship we have with our Boland counterparts.

The club rugby season officially kicks off on 6 April, and with only three weeks left till then, team and player testing is getting ever closer to the real thing. Although it’s too early to measure matters we do see some derby matches in action this weekend, and much like the St Georges vs Strand match, these matches draw big crowds and deliver tremendous entertainment.

Derby matches this weekend include Sir Lowrians vs Strand, Hamediehs vs Rangers, Vineyards vs Lower Paarl and Hands and Hearts vs Scottsdene.

Big match fixtures include Tygerberg vs False Bay, Union Mil vs Villagers, Durbell vs Brackenfell and UWC vs SK Walmers. UWC and Brackenfell are currently playing in the Varsity Cup and Gold Cup respectively and are thus fielding teams which include more players from the rest of their squads.

Maties remain top of the log in the Varsity Cup and continue their unbeaten streak after beating UJ 24 – 13 at the Danie Craven Stadium on Monday, UWC and UCT struggled a bit losing to TUKS and Shimlas respectively.

CPUT are second on the log with 3 wins from 4 matches in the Varsity Shield after their recent 41-25 win over Fort Hare.

Our referees recruitment drive continues with more courses planned for April and May. Joining the referees society is a fantastic way to stay involved and earn cash at the same time. Click here to enrol now.

Our workshop on sponsorship and media for club sport has been moved, the new dates will be published shortly The course, presented by sport brand strategist and presenter of Cape Rugby TV, JP Naude, will look at how to gain sponsorship at club level, content creation and club activity maximisation. Club administrators are urged to be on the lookout for notifications and ensure that at least two of their club administrators who have a passion for club rugby are in attendance.

If you have not yet joined The Faithful, then now is your chance to do so and receive a fantastic hamper on joining.
