Currie Cup goes to club rugby and WP Rugby juniors dominate.

28/06/2019
This week once again sees an abundance of WP club rugby action, and we've had some very proud WP Rugby moments. After last weeks success of our WP Rugby Girls and LSEN teams, our boys u13's and u16's followed suit with dominant results at the Grant Khomo and Craven week

Super League A became a bit more interesting after this past weekend's results as Tygerberg scored an away win over False Bay, SK Walmers beat Uni Mil, and Brackenfell beat Hamiltons. There are three major factors at play, make the top six for the playoffs, secure first or second place on the log for a guaranteed semi-final and avoid the bottom three log positions by the end of the season.

Both False Bay and Durbell will need a five-point win if either of them are to overtake log leaders UCT this weekend. Durbell has home ground advantage, but after The Bay's loss to The Tiere, they will be looking to set the record straight. SK Walmers wasted no time getting back into action with a win over Uni-Mil. This result will be of some concern for Paarl who scored their first season win over Primrose last weekend, as they face SKW this weekend.

Super League B once again delivered the entertainment with some interesting if not surprising results. Hamlets under the guidance of former provincial player Gavin Passens showed their ability to win home and away with their 36-15 win over Helderberg. Collegians made a solid return back at Lenteguer beating St Georges 19-18, and Belhar beat Young Peoples 19-17.

The excitement continues as we see some big games on the cards in Super League B this weekend. Fans will no doubt trek to Bellville as they host neighbours Belhar to enjoy a derby match and some Currie Cup action as our DHL WP Rugby u21 side host the Leopards at Bellville. Kick-off at 13:30. Collegians will be looking to capitalise on their win as they travel to All Saints, but the latter will still be flying high after taking the bragging rights over Macassar last week. Kuilsrivier, who still have two games in hand and only one loss this season host Helderberg, but Helderberg will know that they need to regain their early-season momentum and will likely up the pace.

The log positions in Super League C is turning out even closer than Super League B, as we now have only a twelve point split between the top nine teams.  After Scottsdene's 25-12 loss to Morning Star and Hands and Hearts narrow win over Pniel Villagers, Scottsdene and Hands now share the lead at the top of the log.

This week sees Pniel Villagers travel to Strand in what promises to be a close match. Both teams have a 71% win rate, and both are scoring an average of five tries per match. Pniel has the on-paper advantage of fewer points-against while Strand, on the other hand, has points-for in their favour.

Hamediehs, Masiphumelele and Violets remain unbeaten and in the top three places in the City League. Young Ideas remains in contention for one of these three spots, but they are running out of games in hand. This week Young Ideas takes on Hamediehs who have wins in their last three matches and will make things tough for their visitors.

The Southern League sees Peninsula still on top with Noordelikes who is also unbeaten in second place. The match of the weekend is undoubtedly Retreat versus CPUT. These two are equal on log points and win percentage, but CPUT does have the on-paper advantage with fewer points-against and more points-for.

Only two points off the pace in the Northern League is Blakes, who with the highest win rate on the log and still a game in hand is the likely threat to Albions. Albions recently regained the top spot and have won in their last four games. Eersterivier and Van der Stel – Evergreens are close behind with minor points separation.  The door of opportunity will close for VDS-E as they play their final league match against Whistling Wheels. After this, their fate to get into the top three will depend on the other teams, but a win for them this weekend is vital.

In the Paarl Region, Paarl Rangers and Lower Paarl remain in one and two followed by Riverstones. This weekend's clash between Paarl Rangers and Riverstones is possibly the feature match of the weekend. Riverstones have won their past four games on the trot, but Paarl Rangers are unbeaten, and the former will have to pull out all the stops to close the gap on the log. Young Gardens who come off losses to both these teams now face Lower Paarl who is also unbeaten.

The newly formed NFL League is up and running and saw wins for Young Brothers over Temperance and Cities,  and Silverleaf over Bishop Lavis. Perseverance is top of the NFL League followed by Silverleaf and Young Brothers.
