Clubs in action WP Rugby Mini Rugby Day, Trials and action at Newlands

17/05/2019
In addition to our WP Club Rugby senior action, we’ve had plenty of junior rugby activity lately. Last Saturday saw more than two thousand juniors take to the field at CPUT for the WP Rugby Mini Rugby day, and this week we hosted the Craven Week u18 trials at City Park. Players from various schools in WP have been attending trials over the past four weeks and will play in the final trials against Boland in Wellington next week.

It’s now just over a month since the start of this year’s club rugby season and with plenty of matches to play, it’s not fair to make any contender predictions just yet. We have however seen some of the heavyweights in action against each other, and the results are pointing towards a close competition.

In Super League A, Maties and UCT played to a close finish with Maties coming out on top 23-20. Our other Super League A Varsity Cup side UWC scored a narrow 26-24 win over Tygerberg.  Larger margin wins were seen by Durbell over Villagers and Uni-Mil over Paarl. The weekend’s win for UWC takes them to third on the log while UCT remains in the top spot. These two teams have however played a few more matches than the rest. This weekend sees UCT up against Uni-Mil and UCT will be looking to extend the lead at the top of the log while Uni Mil wrangles for third place with UWC who now play NTK.

Kuilsriver remains in the top spot in Super League B after their 39-6 win over Belhar, but with only three points difference between the top eight, and ten matches left, the door is still wide open for most of the teams.

Super League B sees only one fixture this weekend as Franschhoek host Helderberg. This match promises to be a humdinger, with only points difference separating the two. Even though Franschhoek are unbeaten this season Helderberg do seem to have the upper hand on paper - Helderberg is scoring an average of eight tries per match versus the five of Franschhoek.

Hands and Hearts and Scottsdene remain unbeaten and positioned one and two on the log respectively in Super League C. Strand, Pniel Villagers, Strand United and Blue Stars United are however hot on their heels with only the points from one match separating them from the top of the log. There are no fixtures in Super League C this weekend as this league now takes a three-week break, returning to action on 1 June.

Violets and Hamediehs sit in first and second on the log in the City League, but fans will know that both these teams have a game in hand. Should the unbeaten Masiphumelele score a five-point win over Police this weekend, they will take the top spot as Gardens, who are on equal points to Masi, have a bye. Police are unbeaten at home and will be no pushover. Progress will be looking for a strong performance against Young Ideas as they challenge for third place, and will still be flying high after their derby match win over Temperance and Cities.

Peninsula continues to dominate in the Southern League and remains unbeaten after their 53-7 win over Atlantis, thereby securing their number one position with a three-point margin over CPUT and Rocklands. This margin will be extended this weekend should they score a win over Bishop Lavis. Other fixtures include Noordelikes versus Silverleaf and Atlantis against Young Brothers.

Blakes, now under the guidance of former Springbok and WP Rugby player Wayne Julies remain unbeaten in the Northern League, but are still one point behind Sir Lowrians. This league now takes a one week break and returns to action on 25 May.

Top of the log Paarl Rangers and Lower Paarl remain unbeaten in the Paarl League, and with both teams having a game in hand, this log lead looks set to increase. Lower Paarl scored a 55-21 win over Perel United who now goes on to face Paarl Rangers. This fixture will be Perel United’s first home game this season, with another three to come in succession.

Under the guidance of Coach Jerome Paarwater, our DHL WP Rugby side has now scored three successive wins, with the most recent being the 47-20 win over the Cell C Sharks. Fans finally have the opportunity to see his squad in action when they take on the Zimbabwe Academy side at Newlands this weekend. This side is loaded with WP Club Rugby players and will be a feast of local rugby talent.

The DHL WP Rugby Supersport match is the curtain raiser the DHL Stormers match against the Crusaders. Kick off is at 14:30

We’re happy to say that Captain Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Damian de Allende return to action as we host the Crusaders at Newlands this weekend. We wish our boys the best of luck. Kick off 17:15. Tickets available from wprugby.computicket.com or any Computicket outlet.
