Club Rugby, Mini Rugby and a DHL WP dominate the Cell Sharks

This weekend will see just over one hundred fixtures played across more than thirty venues with most of the teams a quarter of the way through the season in the WP Club Rugby structures.
UCT is unbeaten in first place on the log after their 33-25 mid-week win over UWC, but this weekend is likely to be their toughest test to date as they face Maties in a student derby day at UCT’s Green Mile.
Our other Super League A university side UWC will meanwhile be looking for fresh legs as they face Tygerberg who come off a narrow 20-19 win over NTK. Tygerberg is unbeaten this season and after resting some of their players for the NTK game will be tough opposition for UWC.
Newcomers to Super League A, Paarl are yet to get their first win on the board, and will also likely be facing their toughest challenge so far this season when they come up against False Bay on Saturday. False Bay comes off a three-week break and is unbeaten this season. A win for UWC or any of the former open sides will see one of these teams move above Union Milnerton into second on the log.
The “League of Death” as some of us have come to know Super League B is once again throwing out some close games and surprises. Rangers bounced back after their loss to Helderberg to lose narrowly to St Georges 17-18, at Surrey Estate. Rangers will draw plenty of confidence from this result as they now go on a six-week break.
Fans can expect a big battle in Bellville South as Bellville host Macassar. Macassar scored a surprise 35-33 win over strong opposition Helderberg this past Saturday. Helderberg is currently second on the log while Bellville is still riding high after their win over log leaders Vineyards. Goodwood who is now fourth on the log and is turning out to be a team that is somewhat hard to predict after their loss to former Super League A outfit St Georges a fortnight ago and now a 44-34 win over Belhar. Goodwood is on a bye this weekend, but there is plenty of rugby action at the Goodwood rugby field as they host the Clifford Etzebeth Memorial Day.
Strand who comes off a solid 38-19 win over Elsies Rivier in Super League C will be facing an unbeaten Langa side at the Gustrow sports fields. Even though Langa is only two matches into the season, they come off a 50 -7 win over newcomers Morning Star who had such an excellent 2018 season. With Hands and Hearts, Scottsdene, Pniel Villagers and Strand United all sharing the top of the log it’s impossible to predict what the log will look like after this weekend which shows just how tough this league is.
It’s derby time at City Park this weekend as Progress plays Temperance/Cities. Both these teams are based at City Park, thus no home ground advantage. With a 75% win rate for Progress and their 29-15 midweek win over Caledonian Roses, Progress might have the upper hand.
We are guaranteed to see a status change in the Southern League this weekend as Silverleaf host Bishop Lavis. One of these teams will be walking way happy as they put their first win of the season the board, unless we have a draw. Atlantis will have their work cut out for them as they travel to face unbeaten Peninsula at Sandvlei.
Fans in the Northern League can expect a big match between Blakes and Van Der Stel-Evergreens this weekend in what seems to be yet another derby match. VDS-E have the bragging rights after their 26-21 win over Stellenbosch Coronations. Blakes are unbeaten in second place on the logs and VDS-E in third.
Paarl ( Rangers ) 34-7 win over Violets ( Paarl ) moved them to the top of the log in the Paarl Region. With Rangers on a bye this weekend the log top spot could change this weekend should second-place Albions come away with a bonus point over seventh place Simondium.
Rugby fans are reminded of our WP Rugby mini rugby day at CPUT this Saturday as we expect more than three thousand juniors from schools all over Western Province in juniors action. Play starts at 8 am and will run through to 4 pm.
Congratulations Coach Jerome Paarwater on his third successive win on the road as his DHL WP Rugby side beat The Cell C Sharks XV 47-20 in their Friday afternoon match in Durban. The result included seven tries for our team.
