WP Club Rugby Wrap: Week 5

Once again WP Club Rugby continues to blaze a trail for the amateur game across the country. Round 5 of the WP Club Rugby season took place on Saturday and once again the clubs put on a show.
Super League A results saw Maties convincingly beat UCT 52 – 19 to surge to the top of the standings. They are trailed by Hamiltons who easily saw off Primrose 55 – 6 at Rosmead Avenue.

False Bay shook off the disappointment of losing their 24 match unbeaten run last week as they ran away with Union-Milnerton 53 – 3 on Saturday. Tygerberg made it four wins from four but had to work hard as they defeated Brackenfell 21 – 7. Elsewhere, SK Walmers picked up an important 27 – 23 win over UWC while Thursday night action saw Vics beat winless NTK 36 – 17.

Super League B Log leaders Villager picked up their fifth win in succession after they defeated Franschhoek United 34 – 28 at Brookside. Helderberg and Hamlets sit on 20 points respectively and trail the league leaders. Both sides picked up their fourth wins of the season on Saturday.

Helderberg picked up a hard-fought 18 – 32 win away to Collegians while Hamlets edged out Hands & Heart 43 – 41 in one of the games of the season so far. St Georges are in fourth place after another big win against tough opposition. The Lulu Boys defeated Kraaifontein 36 – 24

Paarl edged out Young Peoples 17 - 10 in the Paarl derby to maintain their successful start to the season.
Violets picked up their first win of the season and what a game to do it in. The beat traditional rivals Rangers 34 – 23 at Surrey Estate on Saturday.

Over in Super League C, the Vineyards train shows no sign of slowing down as the Paarl outfit recorded their fifth win in succession as they edged out Scottsdene 39 – 37 on Saturday.

They are trailed by Macassar who themselves have had a superb start to the season. On Saturday they recorded their upward trajectory with a thumping 48 – 22 win over Hamediehs.

Busy Bees are in third place and trail Macassar by just three points. They defeated Kylemore 38 – 12 in a ruthlessly efficient display on Saturday.

Promotion hopefuls Young Stars went down 20 – 21 away to Strand United on Saturday. The defeat is the second in succession for Rodger Smith’s men who will feel that promotion slipping through their fingers.

In Results elsewhere, Elsies River United went down 20 – 36 to All Saints, while Goodwood defeated Langa 25 – 15.

In the City League, Police’s super season continued on Saturday with a convincing 62 – 20 win over Perseverance. Temp/Cities defeated Progress 23 – 15, Western Zebras narrowly overcame Caledonian Roses 17 -12 while Masiphumelele went down at home 15 – 22 to Manenberg Rangers in a top of the table clash.

Retreat picked up an invaluable away win in the Southern League as they beat Peninsula 25 – 17 on Saturday while in the Northern League Blakes went down at home 8 – 16 to Van der Stel/Evergreens.

In the Paarl League, League Leaders Lower Paarl were shocked at home as they went down 8 – 16 to Young Gardens, Windmeul United edged out Albions 25 – 24, while Paarl Rangers thumped Perel United 46 – 7.
