WP Club Rugby Wrap – Week 4

08/05/2017
Round 4 of the WP Club Rugby season took place on Saturday as the log tables in each league begins to take shape.

Super League A results saw Maties overcome reigning champions False Bay 41-40 in a thriller in Stellenbosch while Hamiltons continued their unbeaten run with a 62 – 24 thumping of Union-Milnerton.

Elsewhere, Belhar edged out Primrose 26 – 25 in another tight affair, Brackenfell picked up a morale-boosting 19-17 win over Vics, Durbell picked up their first win of the season, triumphing 42 – 38 over SK Walmers, while NTK 3-25 against Tygerberg and Pniel Villagers 17-49 against UWC remain winless in the season.

Maties have surged to second place in the log standings, two points behind Hamiltons having played a game less. Brackenfell, Tygerberg, and False Bay round up the Top five.

Super League B log leaders Villager continued their merry way with a hard-fought 31 – 26 win over Rangers at Brookside. They are trailed by Helderberg who picked up a fantastic away victory, overcoming Franschoek United 37 – 30. In third place are Hamlets who once again proved that their Mamre home is a fortress as they defeated Collegians 39 – 13. Violets lost to visitors Bellville 6-24, Hearts thumped Sir Lowrians 60-12 while hosts Paarl was edged 13-27 by visitors St Georges.

In Super League C, Vineyards continue to defy critics as they won their fourth match in succession, beating Strand 39 – 19 in Paarl. Macassar’s attempt to haul back the log leaders received a massive boost as they came away with a 57 – 14 win over Lagunya on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Young Stars went down to Busy Bees 15 – 30 at the Green Point Track, Raithby Universals defeated Elsies River 34 – 10, and Scottsdene edged out Langa 35 – 32 in a thrilling encounter. In a Strand derby All Saints narrowly lost out 11-14 to Stand United.

With the regional trials bringing rugby in those leagues to the forefront of the public eye, it was no surprise that teams in the City, Southern, and Northern leagues have upped their game in recent weeks.

In the City League, Caledonian Roses defeated CPUT 30 – 10, Manenberg Rangers edged out Silvertree 18-17 and Progress surprised Masi 17-15.

Over in the Northern League, Blue Jets defeated Whistling Wheels 22 – 20, Strand Pioneers went down at home to Eersterivier 5 – 73, while Khayalitsha came away with a narrow 38 – 29 win over Stellenbosch/Coronations.

The Southern League results, league leaders Young Wesleys defeated Rocklands 22 – 0, while Atlantis picked up an invaluable 12 – 7 win over Silverleaf.

Allandale continue to excite and astound in equal measure as the Paarl Region joint league leaders cruised to a 45 – 7 win over Young Gardens on Saturday. They are joined at the top of the table by traditional powerhouses Lower Paarl who defeated Paarl Rangers 17 – 12.

There is midweek action on Wednesday night as Union-Milnerton host Maties at Theo Marais Park. That game will be a precursor for another bumper weekend of club rugby action as the race for glory heats up.
