Tygerberg awarded Gold Cup wildcard status!

Tygerberg awarded Gold Cup wildcard status!

SA Rugby confirmed participation of Tygerberg (WP) and Swallows (Border) as tournament wildcards in 2017 Gold Cup, in a statement that was announced today.
Following a meeting of SA Rugby’s Executive Council on Friday, it was decided that both teams would be ideal wildcard entrants to the tournament.

Both clubs come with a die-hard fan base (between the two of them they pulled in over 36 000 spectators in three live SuperSport Challenge Cup curtain-raisers), and will be welcome additions to the Gold Cup. Tygerberg’s game against rivals Belhar brought in over 10 000 spectators to Florida Park.

Tygerberg have enjoyed a superb 2017 season and continue to prove themselves capable of going toe-to-toe with the top clubs in Super League A.

This will be the club’s first appearance in the Gold Cup, having previously played in a National Tournament 16 years ago.

With the WP Club acquitting themselves well at the National Tournament, Tygerberg will hope to emulate 2015 Gold Cup Champions Durbell as they look to make a splash in their Gold Cup debut.

Club President Peter Jooste was understandably beaming with the news. “We are extremely excited about this announcement,” he said. “This is good not only for the club but for the Ravensmead Community too. I believed we deserved to be included based on our performances over the years and we are extremely grateful to have been selected.”

The Gold Cup, which kicks off on 9 September and runs to 29 October, is identical to the Rugby World Cup format, consisting of four pools of five teams each, with each club playing two home and two away matches over the five-week duration of the pool stages, with the top two sides from each pool progressing to the quarter-finals.

The automatic qualifiers from Western Province, Boland, SWD, EP and Valke will be decided in the coming weeks.
